  1. Tax brackets explained: can a raise make you take home less?

    No. Under a progressive bracket system, each rate applies only to the slice of income inside its bracket. Crossing a threshold means paying the higher rate only on the dollars above it. Mathematically, tax is a continuous piecewise function with slope below 100%, so take-home pay always rises when gross pay rises. Your effective rate (tax divided by income) always sits below your marginal rate (the top bracket you reach).
